How to measure & fit your outdoor free-hang blind

Free-hang outdoor blinds are measured at the top, where the headbox mounts. Work in millimetres, measure each opening separately, and the RightFit guarantee has you covered.

Reveal or face fix? Recess-mount the headbox inside an opening (we take 10 mm off the width so it clears the sides), or face/top-fix over the opening (add overlap for full coverage). The size calculator below gives your exact order size either way.

1 · Measure the width at the top

Free-hang blinds hang from a headbox fixed at the top, so the width that matters is at the top — measure the full finished width you want the blind to cover, at the mounting point.

  • Measure the finished width you want at the top, where the blind will be fixed.
  • Enter that finished width in the designer — we make the fabric 75 mm narrower than your finished width so it runs freely in the hardware.

2 · Measure the drop — use the longest length

Measure from the top (the mounting point) down to where you want the blind to end. If the patio floor or ground is uneven, take the longest length and use that, so the blind reaches all the way down at every point.

3 · Fitting (top fix)

In the box: your made-to-measure outdoor blind, mounting brackets, wall plugs and bolts, and either the crank handle (manual) or the motor, adaptor, remote and charging cable (motorised). Drill bit: a 14 mm bit for the masonry fixings. No middle support bracket is needed at our online sizes.
  1. Mount the headbox at the top. Fix the brackets/headbox level across the top of the opening or beam.
  2. Allow the 10 mm deduction. When top-fixing, deduct 10 mm from the width at the fixing so the blind clears the sides and drops cleanly.
  3. Fit level & square. Check the headbox is dead level before fixing — an out-of-level top makes the blind track to one side.
  4. Operate & test. Run it down and up a few times. Crank blinds should wind smoothly; motorised blinds are set to your remote or switch when installed.
We handle the allowances. Give us the finished width you want at the top and the longest drop — we make the fabric 75 mm narrower, and you take off 10 mm when top-fixing. That’s why the RightFit guarantee can cover a mis-measure.
Not sure, or a big span? Large patios, wind-prone spots and motorised runs are best measured in person — book a free measure and our team handles it.
