Shopping for automated blinds, you will run into three words used almost interchangeably: smart blinds, electric blinds and motorised blinds. It is confusing, because for the most part they describe the same thing. Here is what each term really means, so you know what you are buying.
Are smart, electric and motorised blinds the same thing?
Largely, yes. All three are window blinds that open and close on a built-in motor instead of a cord or chain. The differences are in the words people reach for, not in three separate products.
Electric and motorised blinds
“Electric blinds” and “motorised blinds” mean exactly the same thing: a blind with a powered motor in the headrail. You press a button and it moves. That is the whole idea, and it is the foundation everything else is built on.
Smart blinds
“Smart” is the extra layer. A smart blind is a motorised blind that also connects to your home network, so you can control it from an app, set it to a schedule, and link it to a voice assistant or a wider smart-home setup. In other words, every smart blind is motorised, but a motorised blind only becomes “smart” once you add that app and voice control. When you add a hub, an ordinary motorised blind in your home can become a smart one — you are not locked out of it later.
How you control them
One of the nice things about a modern motor is that you are not stuck with a single control method. You can mix and match:
- Remote control — a handheld remote for one blind or a whole room.
- Wall switch — a neat switch fixed to the wall, familiar to everyone in the house.
- App — open, close and set schedules from your phone, whether you are on the couch or away from home.
- Voice — hands-free control through Google Home, Amazon Alexa or Apple HomeKit. “Close the lounge blinds” and they close.
Most homes use a combination — a remote for everyday use, with the app and voice for scheduling and when your hands are full.
How they’re powered
There are three ways to power a motorised blind, and the right one depends on the window:
- Rechargeable battery — the simplest option, with no wiring. You charge the battery every several months, much like a phone. Ideal for retrofitting into a finished home.
- Solar — a small solar panel keeps the battery topped up, so you rarely think about charging. It suits sunny windows, of which Cape Town has no shortage.
- Mains (220V) — hard-wired for a permanent, maintenance-free supply. Best planned into a new build or renovation while walls are open.
Which blinds can be motorised
Most blind types can take a motor. Roller blinds are the most common, and our roller blinds motorise cleanly. Cellular, Roman, vertical and vision blinds, and outdoor zip-track blinds can all be automated too, and cellular blinds are a popular choice for motorising on high or hard-to-reach windows. Safer for children and pets
This is the reason a lot of families motorise, and it is worth stating plainly. A motorised blind has no cords or chains hanging down, which removes a well-known hazard for young children and pets. For nurseries, playrooms and any home with little ones, cordless, motorised blinds are the safer choice.
Everyday reasons people motorise
Beyond convenience, there are practical wins:
- Managing heat and light — set blinds to close against the harsh afternoon sun before a west-facing room overheats, and open again in the cool of the evening. It keeps rooms more comfortable and eases the load on fans and air-conditioning.
- Holiday security — scheduled blinds that open in the morning and close at night make an empty house look lived-in while you are away.
- Protecting your furniture — automatically lowering blinds during the brightest hours slows the fading of floors, sofas and artwork.
- Reach — big windows, stairwell windows and blinds behind a kitchen counter all become effortless.
