Buying guide · Shutters

Shutters are the one window treatment people buy once. They are fixed to the frame, they are opened and closed thousands of times, and they are still there when the sofa has been changed twice. That is why choosing them deserves more care than choosing a blind. This guide covers the three ranges we fit in Cape Town, the styles, which rooms suit which, and what to expect on price and lead time.

Why shutters suit Cape Town homes

Cape Town asks a lot of a window. Hard summer sun from the north and west, a south-easter that carries dust, wet winters, and on the coast a salt air that is unkind to anything that corrodes. Shutters answer all of it. The louvres tilt to take the glare off a room while the light stays, they close fully for privacy and blockout, and the panel adds a layer of insulation against both the January heat and the July cold. There is no cord, no chain and no fabric to fade.

They also belong here visually. On a Victorian cottage in Observatory, a Cape Dutch gable in Stellenbosch or a white seaboard apartment, a painted shutter looks as if it was always part of the architecture. Blinds dress a window. Shutters become part of it.

The three ranges we fit

Urban shutters

Our contemporary range, and the one most Cape Town clients choose. Clean lines, a crisp painted finish, and the full set of styles: café-style, tier-on-tier and full-height. Urban shutters carry a 10-year warranty.

Altra shutters

The versatile range for wide openings and doors. Hinged, double-hinged and folding panels that open right back so a sliding door or a wall of glass is fully usable. Altra shutters carry our standard 2-year warranty.

Taylor shutters

A premium range we specify where the brief calls for it. Taylor shutters also carry a 10-year warranty. We bring samples of all three to the measure so you see the finish and feel the louvre action in your own light.

Styles explained

  • Full height: one panel the height of the window, the classic look. Living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms.
  • Café-style: shutters on the lower half of the window only. Privacy from the street, open sky above. Kitchens, dining rooms, ground-floor rooms on a busy road.
  • Tier-on-tier: two independent sets of panels, top and bottom. Open the top for light, keep the bottom closed for privacy. Street-facing lounges and bedrooms.
  • Hinged and folding: panels that fold or swing clear of doors and wide openings. French doors, sliding doors, patio glass.

A mid-rail can be added so the upper and lower louvres on one panel tilt separately, which gives much of the tier-on-tier flexibility in a full-height look. We talk through this on site, window by window.

Which rooms, which shutters

Sliding and French doorsAltra hinged or foldingPanels clear the opening completely.

Finish, colour and louvre

White and soft neutrals account for most of what we fit, because they suit the light here and they read as architecture rather than decoration. Darker painted finishes work on heritage and farm-style homes. Louvre size changes the character: a wider louvre gives a more open view and a more contemporary feel, a narrower one a traditional look. The samples at the measure settle this quickly.

Bathrooms, kitchens and the coast

Two places catch people out. Steam and splashes in a bathroom or kitchen, and salt air on the Atlantic Seaboard, in Blouberg or along the False Bay coast. Both are handled with the moisture-friendly options in the Urban range, which do not swell, warp or peel, and which wipe clean. We will tell you at the measure if a particular window needs that specification.

What shutters cost in Cape Town

Shutters are priced per window, and three things set the figure: the size of the opening, the style (full height is simplest, tier-on-tier and folding doors need more panels and hardware) and the range. We do not sell shutters online, because they must be measured by us and fitted by us to carry their warranty, so the price comes on a written quote after a free in-home measure. Fitting is included in that quote. If you are weighing shutters against blinds for the same window, our blinds price guide gives you real from-prices for the blind side of the comparison.

One honest point about value: shutters cost more than a blind on the day and less over the life of the window. They do not fade, they are not replaced when the room is redecorated, and they add to a home at resale in a way a blind does not.

Window shutters: your questions

Are window shutters worth it in Cape Town?

For street-facing, sun-facing and coastal windows, yes. They control glare without losing light, close fully for privacy, insulate against heat and cold, and last for decades with no fabric to fade. They cost more than a blind on the day and less over the life of the window.

Can shutters be fitted to sliding and French doors?

Yes. The Altra range has hinged, double-hinged and folding panels made for doors and wide openings, so the panels swing or fold clear and the door stays fully usable.

Can you put shutters in a bathroom or kitchen?

Yes, in the moisture-friendly options of the Urban range, which cope with steam and splashes and wipe clean. Café-style shutters are a popular choice for bathroom privacy at eye level.

What warranty do shutters carry?

Urban shutters and Taylor shutters carry a 10-year warranty. Altra shutters carry our standard 2-year warranty. The warranty runs from the installation date.

Can I buy shutters online?

No. Shutters must be measured and fitted by our team to carry their warranty, so they are quoted after a free in-home measure in Cape Town. Blinds and wave curtains can be ordered online and couriered nationwide.

How much do window shutters cost in Cape Town?

Shutters are priced per window on a written quote, after a free measure. The size of the opening, the style and the range set the price, and fitting and VAT are included. Compare against our published blinds prices to weigh shutters against a blind on the same window.
