A Cape Town patio is a room with no walls, and for half the year the south-easter and the afternoon sun decide whether you can sit in it. Outdoor blinds give the room back. This guide explains the three systems we fit, which fabrics stand up to the Cape, when a motor is worth it, and what it all costs.
What an outdoor blind has to cope with here
Three things, and usually all three in one week. Wind: the south-easter from October to March, which will lift and slap any fabric that is not held at the sides. Sun: a low western sun that comes in under the roof from about three o’clock and makes a west-facing stoep unusable. Rain: the north-wester in winter, which drives in sideways. A blind for a Cape Town patio is specified against the worst of these, not the average day.
The three systems
Free-hang outdoor blinds
A screen fabric on a roller, with a weighted bottom bar and no side guides. It is the simplest system and the only one you can design and order online, from R7,110 including VAT, with a manual crank or a wire-free motor. Right for a sheltered patio, a balcony with walls on three sides, or a north-facing veranda where sun is the problem rather than wind. In a strong blow you roll it up; that is the trade-off for the lower price.
Zip X blinds
The same screen fabric, but a zip welded into each edge runs inside a side track, so the fabric is locked in from top to bottom. The sides seal, the blind stays down in wind, insects stay out and rain is kept off the furniture. Zip X is what we specify for an exposed patio, a seaboard balcony or any braai area you want to use on a windy evening. It is measured and installed by our own team, with a neat cassette for a wall-to-wall finish.
Channel X blinds
A channel-guided system for high-wind positions. The fabric runs in secure side channels that hold it firmly, with smooth operation and a clean look. Channel X suits coastal homes and elevated patios where stability matters most. Also measured and fitted by us.
| Free-hang | Zip X | Channel X | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wind | Roll up in a strong blow | Stays down; sides locked | Stays down; sides held |
| Insects and rain | Open at the sides | Sealed | Mostly sealed |

The fabric does most of the work
All three systems use outdoor screen fabric: a woven mesh that cuts most of the glare and UV, keeps the patio private from the street by day, and still lets you see out and lets air through. The openness of the weave sets the balance. A tighter weave gives more shade and privacy, a more open weave more view and breeze. We fit two families:
- Mode Outdoor and Mode 0: our standard outdoor screens, in a wide colour range, with a 10-year warranty on the fabric.
- SheerWeave 4500: a premium screen with a 5-year warranty.
Colour matters more outdoors than in. A dark fabric gives the clearest view out and the least glare; a light fabric reflects more heat but shows the room behind it at night. Samples are free, and we bring them to the measure.
Crank or motor
A manual crank is fine on a single blind you move twice a day. On a wide patio with two or three blinds, or anywhere the blind goes up and down with the sun, a motor is the better specification. In the online designer you choose between a ShawSmart wire-free motor, rechargeable with no wiring and an optional solar charging panel, and a Somfy Maestria mains motor. On fitted Zip X and Channel X blinds we specify Somfy motorisation, which carries a 5-year warranty and can run from a remote, a wall switch or an app. Read how to choose motorised blinds for the full battery-solar-mains comparison.
Where the blind sits
An outdoor blind can be fixed in the reveal of the opening, on the face of the beam or on the side. The headbox can be an open roll, a full cassette that hides the roll and keeps the fabric clean, or a fascia that recesses neatly. Which is right depends on the structure, the look you want and where the fixings can go, which is why a fitted blind starts with a measure. For an online free-hang blind the measure guide walks you through each option with a tape and a pencil.
What outdoor blinds cost in Cape Town
- Free-hang online: from R7,110 per blind including VAT, priced live on your size, fabric, cassette and operation. Made to order in 10 to 15 working days, then couriered anywhere in South Africa.
- Zip X and Channel X: quoted per blind after a free in-home measure in greater Cape Town, fitting included.
- Fitting a free-hang blind for you: R200 per blind plus a once-off R850 call-out per visit.
Outdoor blinds are the most expensive blind on the house and the one that changes how you live in it. The blinds price guide puts the figures beside the indoor range.
Looking after them
Hose the fabric down a few times a year, more often near the sea, and let it dry before rolling it up. Lower a Zip X blind in the wind by all means; roll a free-hang blind up before the south-easter gets going. Keep the tracks clear of sand. That is the whole routine.
Which one for your patio
| Your space | We would specify |
|---|---|
| Sheltered north-facing veranda, sun is the issue | Free-hang, crank or motor |
| Open patio that gets the south-easter | Zip X, motorised |
| Seaboard or Blouberg balcony | Zip X, Mode fabric |
| Braai area used on winter evenings | Zip X for the rain seal |
| Elevated or coastal high-wind position | Channel X |
| Outside Cape Town | Free-hang ordered online, couriered |
Outdoor blinds: your questions
What is the difference between Zip X and free-hang outdoor blinds?
A free-hang blind has no side guides, so it is rolled up in strong wind and the sides stay open. A Zip X blind has a zip in each edge of the fabric running inside a side track, so the blind stays down in wind, the sides are sealed against insects and rain, and the finish is wall to wall.
Do outdoor blinds block the wind?
Zip X and Channel X blinds take the force out of the wind and keep the patio usable; the screen fabric lets some air through, which is what stops it behaving like a sail. A free-hang blind is for sun and privacy and should be rolled up in a strong blow.
Can you see through outdoor screen blinds?
Yes. From inside you see out, and by day the patio is private from the street. At night, with the lights on, the view reverses, as with any screen fabric. A darker colour gives the clearest view out.
How much do outdoor blinds cost in Cape Town?
Free-hang outdoor blinds start at R7,110 per blind including VAT when you design and order online. Zip X and Channel X blinds are measured by us and quoted per blind, fitting included. All our prices include VAT.
How long do outdoor blinds take?
Outdoor blinds are made to order in about 10 to 15 working days. Online orders are then couriered, usually 2 to 3 working days on standard delivery. Fitted Zip X blinds are installed by our team once made.
What warranty do outdoor blinds carry?
Mode Outdoor and Mode 0 screen fabrics carry a 10-year warranty, SheerWeave 4500 a 5-year warranty, motorisation 5 years, and the blind itself 2 years. The warranty runs from installation, or from delivery on an online order you fit yourself.
